Business Development Manager Role


As a business development manager in a tech start-up, you'll:

  • Research and identify new business opportunities - including new markets, growth areas, trends, customers, partnerships, products, and services - or new ways of reaching existing and potential markets
  • Seek out the appropriate contact for partnerships and generate leads and cold call prospective partners.
  • Foster and develop relationships with customers/clients and partners
  • Think strategically - seeing the bigger picture and setting aims and objectives in order to develop and improve the business
  • Work strategically - carrying out necessary planning in order to implement operational changes
  • Have a good understanding of the business's products or services and be able to advise others about them
  • Ensure staff are on board throughout the organization and understand the need for change and what is required of them
  • Train members of your team, arranging external training where appropriate
  • Seek ways of improving the way the business operates
  • Attend seminars, conferences, and events where appropriate
  • Keep abreast of trends and changes in the business world.
  • Negotiate pricing with customers, and suppliers in some cases
  • Carry out sales forecasts and analysis and present your findings to senior management
  • Develop the business sales and marketing strategy.


Compensation is very attractive but varies depending on qualification and years of experience.

Working Hours

You'll usually work a regular 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday, though you may on occasion have to work longer to meet a project deadline or when attending an event or conference.

Flexible working and working from home may be possible.

What to Expect

  • You’ll work in a tech start-up.
  • You'll occasionally travel within the day for in-person meetings where possible with customers and other business partners.
  • It can be challenging trying to create new business opportunities for a start-up, however, business development is quite a creative role and can be very satisfying long-term.
  • A key part of your role will focus on research.
  • You may have the responsibility of managing a team and its output.
  • You'll be expected to dress smartly, especially for meetings, though slightly more relaxed business casual attire may be acceptable at other times.


A degree in a related field is valuable. Experience, especially in B2B and B2C, counts. Passion for the role is essential.


You'll need to have:

  • Resilience

  • Written and verbal communication skills - needed for communicating with a range of people, both internally and externally, as well as presentation skills

  • The ability to multitask and prioritize your workload
  • Project management and organizational skills
  • The ability to motivate yourself and set your own goals
  • Negotiating skills
  • The ability to think strategically and see the big picture

  • Initiative and the confidence to start things from scratch.
